Pediatric or Children Inguinal Hydrocele

  • What is this disease?

    • Inguinal hydrocele in children are because of Patent Processus vaginalis (the testes in male descent from abdomen to scrotum during intrauterine life and if this opening does not closes, it leads to a defect called patent processus vaginalis). If the defect is small through which only peritoneal fluid can trickle, it is known as hydrocele.

  • How it is diagnosed?

    • The diagnosis is done by clinical examination only.

  • How it is treated?

    • Surgery is the only modality available to treat this condition. It can be done by either open method or Laparoscopic method.

  • When it should be operated?

    • The surgery for hydrocele should be done after one to two years of age, as there are chances of spontaneous resolution.

  • Are there other alternative methods of treatment?

    • Medical management is not successful in this condition

  • How is the surgery done?

    • In open surgery, a small cut in made in groin area and the herniotomy is done.

    • In Laparoscopic surgery, keyhole incisions are made over abdomen and the herniotomy is done.
